Katrina Bikes - Seattle Public Schools
Seattle Public Schools was a key partner in the Katrina Bikes Partnership. From
Superintendent to teachers, staff and students, the support and enthusiasm was
enormous and very much appreciated.
Elementary school students provided 400 very touching notes and pictures, which
were slipped into ziplock bags and zip-tied to the bike frames. Some of the notes
can be seen on the wall in the photos with High School students reading them.
High School students provided invaluable assistance at the site on all four days
of the event. They repaired, prepped, cleaned, stacked and loaded bikes, doing
anything necessary to complete the project.
Several High School students and volunteers attended the University of Washington’s
Katrina Thanksgiving dinner November 17. UW President Mark Emmert and Governor
Christine Gregoire separately came over to our table, said they had heard all about
the project, shook hands with each person, had high praise for the project’s
volunteers and thanked them.
The high energy, cheerfulness, commitment and knowledge about bicycles were
appreciated by all who observed our Public School students.
