January 4th, Sunday, Southworth - Port Orchard

     Ride will go from Southworth along the water through Manchester to Port Orchard. After a food stop at the Port Orchard Marina, will back track along the water to Southworth for the ferry home to Seattle. Bring $6.20 for ferry charge.

     We will ride south from the Tukwila Community Center on the Green River and Interurban Trails to Auburn for mid ride snacks. For those wanting a less mileage you can turn around where the two trails come together for an abbreviated ride.

Event Details:
     Mega-projects are just over the horizon that will definitely affect how and where you ride. Join us at the January edition of Cascade's monthly presentation series for briefings by both the SR-520 Bridge and Viaduct project teams. They will address the bicycle and pedestrian aspects of each project, including the soon to be started South Viaduct segment.

Ride Start: Rose Hill Community Center, Mukilteo, WA - Map/Directions.

Naval Station Everett, Everett, WA. Levels: Social/Recreational.
Ride Distance: ~26 miles.
Ride Terrain: Winding, rolling urban arterials with bike lanes and quiet neighborhood streets.

     Ride will be at a leisure pace with rolling terrain for the first 3 miles. After that it's pretty flat grade through mostly restored classic neighborhoods with scenic views. Will stop in Everett for mid ride break.

     Will ride the 37 mile South Everett - Snohomish - Everett Marina route listed in our club library.
     If weather turns out to be rainy and cold, members can also decide on a shorter 24 mile loop, mostly on trail, from McCollum Park to downtown Everett and back.

February 1st, Sunday, South Lake Washington - Cedar River Trail
Ride Start: Community Center, Mercer Island, WA - Map/Directions.

     Depending on weather and member choice, we will ride from Mercer Island around South Lake Washington and add in the Cedar River Trail for extra mileage.
     This is a traditional and fun route that can be made as long or as short as members want.

February 4th, Wednesday, Cedar River Park - Landsburg
Ride Start: Cedar River Park, Renton, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 10am for 10:30am start.
Landsburg (Seattle Water) Park. Levels: Social.
Ride Distance: ~30 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat Trail.
Lead: ride lead.
Ride Details:
     We will ride the Cedar River Trail out to Landsburg Park and back. The first 11 miles will be on paved trail. The last 3-4 miles will be on packed gravel trail. After a short stop at the park, we will return the way we came. Bring snacks for on ride refueling.

February 10th, Tuesday, 2008 Beijing Paralympics -
         An Inside View of the Cycling Venues

2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Address: 222 Yale Street, Seattle, WA.

Event Details:
     Join Erik Moen, PT, CSCS, for an evening celebrating the historic 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. USA Cycling athletes won an impressive 14 medals in road and track bicycling. Go “backstage” with Erik to the opening ceremonies (The Birds Nest), the athlete village, training sessions, and competition venues (Laoshan Velodrome, Swim Cube and the Ming Tomb Reservoir).
     Erik has practiced orthopedic and sports physical therapy for over 13 years in the Puget Sound and is nationally recognized as an expert in the treatment of the endurance athlete. Erik served as a Physical Therapist/Soignuer for the USA Cycling Team at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

     For a nice winter ride we will go from Mercer Island to Kirkland Marina Park for lunch. For those wanting a few more miles you can end your ride with a quick loop around Mercer Island.

     The first Sunday of every month we will have a ride starting from the Mercer Island Community Center. Ride selection will be by member choice from the Mercer Island Section of the SBC Maps/Cue Sheet Library. This month's ride will be the North Lake Washington Loop which can easily be extended for anyone wanting more mileage by doing the entire 54 mile lake loop.

March 8th, Sunday, Mercer Island - Magnolia Discovery Park
Ride Start: Community Center, Mercer Island, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

Ride Distance: 30 miles.

     This week's ride is on scenic trail and low traffic urban roads with one section along the Seattle Water Front on the return trip to the start. The total loop is just 30 miles, but can be extended by members wanting more mileage by adding the Mercer Island loop to the beginning or end of the ride (extra 14 miles).
     To see just how scenic this route is just check out the map/cue sheet in the club library. The route goes along scenic Lake Washington, through the Arboretum, around Magnolia Bluff, through Seattle Sculpture Park and the International District before taking the I-90 Bike Trail back to the start.

March 22nd, Sunday, Cedar River Park - Landsburg
Ride Start: Cedar River Park, Renton, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Cedar Grove (Seattle Water) Park. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 22/30/34 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat and Rolling/Hilly.

Ride Details:
     The ride will either be all on trail or on trail with a few country roads added in, weather permitting.
     For thus wanting all on trail, you have the option of 22 miles on paved trail or 30 miles with a few miles on hard packed dirt (easily navigable with narrow width tires as well as cross/mountain bikes).
     The longer route, partially on country roads, avoids the packed dirt section of the trail and adds in a few good hill climbs.
     I recommend bringing snacks for mid-ride nourishment, but there is a restaurant option just off trail, near the intersection of SR-169 and Witte Road. There are also options at the end of the ride in Renton.

     The first Sunday of every month we will have a ride starting from the Mercer Island Community Center.
     For April we will try out a brand new route from Mercer Island to the Museum of Flight and back. The first section of the route is along Lake Washington Blvd to Seward Park where we head south and west to the museum. The second portion returns everyone north via the Airport Perimeter Road and Beacon Avenue South to the International District for a quick snack stop at Uwajimaya Village before returning to the start.

April 12th, Sunday, Gasworks - Boeing Museum of Flight
Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Seward Park, Seattle, WA. Levels: Social/Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 33+ miles.
Ride Terrain: Urban Streets with Some Climbs.

Ride Details:
     Will bike from Gasworks Park on the standard Lake Washington bike trail to Seward Park. At the park we will continue south on Seward Park Avenue until Rainier Avenue where we will cut over via 51st and the Boeing Access Road to the Museum of Flight.
     After a brief stop at the museum will head north again via Perimeter Road to Georgetown and then either continue on Beacon Avenue or 1st Avenue to the International District. From here we will pick up the Seattle waterfront trail to Magnolia Hill where we can either take a quick loop around the bluff or continue more directly back to the start.

     This week's ride is on very scenic Skagit Country country roads.
     We will ride on rural country roads from Mount Vernon to La Conner for lunch and socializing before returning to the start.
     For anyone wanting a few extra miles you can add on the 12 mile loop on Fidalgo Island biking around the Swinomish Indian Reservation.

April 25th, Saturday, 6th Annual - Tour de Lopez
       Event is limited to 800 riders and sells out very early.

     Join other members on Tour de Lopez.
     Enjoy a scenic ferry ride from Anacortes to Lopez. Check-in for ride will be from 9:30-11am at Odlin County Park – a short ride from the Ferry landing. Pick up your route map, lunch voucher, and details about the day's ride. Tour routes will include marked designated halfway points with snacks, water & restrooms. Your ride will conclude in the Village Park with a BBQ lunch presented by the Bay Cafe from 1-3pm.

     Since it is still early in the season we will take a traditional Mercer Island loop of just 30 miles, Mercer Island - Magnolia Discovery Park. We start by first going north on Lake Washington Blvd to the Universtiy of Washington and then Fremont to Magnolia. Then after a fun climb up the bluff to view Puget Sound, we will head to downtown Seattle for snacks and socializing before heading back to the start.

May 10th, Sunday, North Bend - Snoqualmie Falls - Fall City
Ride Start: North Bend, WA - Map/Directions.
SBC members biking through Ernie's Grove. Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 30/47 miles.
Ride Terrain: Rolling/Hilly.
Lead: ride lead.
Ride Details:
     From North Bend we will go east out of town and then loop back to Ernie's Grove and Snoqualmie Falls. This route is mostly on scenic rural King County roads along with a short section on paved trail.
     Riders will be broken into two groups, Social and Intermediate. Social Riders will stay on flat to rolling roads from North Bend to the falls where all will break for mid-ride nourishment and socializing.
     Intermediate Riders will take the same route but continue downhill at the falls to Fall City for an extra seventeen miles.
     Everyone will meet afterwards in North Bend for cherry pie.

May 16th, Saturday, San Juan Island
Ride Start: Anacortes Ferry Dock, Anacortes, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 7:15am for 7:45am ferry.
San Juan Island's Lime Kiln Point - Famous for Whale Watching. Ride Details:
     Allow 2 hours to drive from Seattle, park, get ticket, etc. You can either park at the terminal for a fee or near Skyline Marina on the street for free.
     Full ride is 44 miles with options to shorten. There are hills but they aren't killer. See Other Washington Routes in Maps Library.
     Early lunch at Roche Harbor at around 11am or bring your own and eat at San Juan Island State Park on the west side of the island.
     To complete the full pull, you must swim at Cattle point with Jerry.
     Oysters and micro beers (or ice cream) at end of ride. And if we miss the 4:15pm ferry, we could eat dinner there, otherwise you should be back in Anacortes at 5:35pm for the drive home.

Ride Distance: 34 miles.
Ride Terrain: Very Hilly.

     Everyone will meet in the north Lincoln Park parking lot. Bring $5.30 for ferry fare. (If you are late, ride straight to ferry dock to meet others.)
     Vashon Island is noted for hills so all riders must be prepared to do some hill climbs with their bikes.
     We will ride the main 27 mile loop going down the west side of the island and returning up the east side along the water to the City of Vashon for mid-ride nourishment and socializing at a local establishment. Riders wanting a few extra miles can add in Reddings Beach Road, the Burton Loop and 171st Street for a total of 34 miles.
     For riders wanting even more mileage and willing to help lead a longer route, Maury Island can be added to give you close to 52 miles.

     Century Ride of the Centuries will take you past a number of these beautiful farms and ranches, rising from Pendleton into the highlands of the nearby Blue Mountain foothills. You'll also travel through the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. There, residents with even deeper roots, living on lands occupied by their ancestors for thousands of years, have their farming and ranching operations.          This is a fun route starting from Gasworks Park and going north, first past Green Lake then to Wedgewood where the route reverses direction and goes completely south along the shores of Lake Washington. Just south of I-90 the route turns west to Beacon Hill where we start north again.
         Bring snacks with you for a few early stops we will make at parks along the route. Then we will make a late ride stop (27 mile post) at the International District for desert snacks and socializing before returning to Gasworks Park.

         For a fun ride variation, we will bike from Gasworks Park to Edmonds via Ballard's Shilshoe Marina, Golden Gardens and Richmond Beach for the most spectacular views of Puget Sound around. On the way back, after a steep climb up Carlyle Hall Road we will take a direct route south on Fremont Avenue stopping briefly at Seattle City Light Power Station's Outdoor Art, Windmills by Emil Gerke.
         Our mid-way stop will be a local Edmonds establishment for nourishment and socializing.
         With enough demand will also offer a less demanding route going through Ballard, skipping the steep Blueridge neighborhood climbs.

         Our return trip will be west back across the I-90 Bike Trail. In Seattle we will select from multiple fun return routes to get home.

         Starting from Mercer Island Community Center we will ride the standard 28 Mile loop around South Lake Washington with a stop at Kubota Gardens on the way. This is a fun easy route for anyone just wanting a relaxing Sunday afternoon ride.
         For members wanting a few more miles to get ready for STP or other area long distance ride, you can add in the Cedar River Trail at the end of the lake which will give you an easy extra 20 miles on flat paved trail for a total of 50 miles.
         Members are encouraged to bring snacks with them for mid ride breaks since Gene Coulon Park is the only good place on this route with restaurants.

    July 12th, Sunday, Whidbey Island Choochokam Arts Ride
    Ride Start: Mukilteo Ferry Dock, Mukilteo, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9am for 9:30am ferry.
    Langley Choochokam Arts Festival. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 14, 23 or 36 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Rolling/Hilly.

    Ride Details:
         Meet at the ferry dock for the Mukilteo Ferry to Clinton. Bring $4.95 for ferry fare.
         Whidbey Island is noted for hills so all riders must be prepared to do some hill climbs with their bikes, though the shorter the loop the less the climbs so they shouldn't prevent any level rider from going.
         The 14 mile loop is just from the ferry dock at Clinton to Langley and back. The 23 mile loop has a small additional loop added in so that you would get to Clinton at the 16 mile marker. The 36 mile loop gets you to Clinton at the 30 mile marker.
         What this all means is that you can select the distance that is right for you and we will all meet in Clinton for the Choochokam Arts Festival for nourishment and socializing. See www.choochokamarts.org for festival details.
         Bring snacks with you for mid ride breaks or buy snacks along the way. There is an excellent bakery in Clinton, groceries in both Clinton and Freeland, and you can buy food at the Festival.

On our return trip we will complete the loop around north Tacoma bringing us back to Thea's Park.
         Bring snacks with you for mid ride breaks or buy snacks along the way. This ride will include all the best of Tacoma so it is one you don't want to miss.

    July 26th, Sunday, Bike & Boat to Bainbridge Island
    Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.

         We start the day at Gasworks and bike to the South Lake Union Historic Ships Wharf via the new Westlake Ave bike trail. At the wharf we board the Steamship Virginia V for a 3 hour boat trip taking us through the ship canal and locks to Bainbridge Island. On Bainbridge we will bike the south island loop and return to Seattle via the regular ferry. (See below for alternate return.)

    Alternate Return:
    Virginia V - Last of Puget Sound's Mosquito Fleet.      For no extra charge you can return via the Virginia V, leaving Bainbridge at 7pm. If you decide on this option you should join the group at the Lake Union wharf (south end of lake) since expected return time is 10pm (after dark). Parking is available near the wharf. This would give you 6 hours on Bainbridge Island, enough time to have a leisurely dinner there or do full island 40 mile loop.

    August 2nd, Sunday, Mercer Island Bellevue Loop
    Ride Start: Community Center, Mercer Island, WA - Map/Directions.

    Bellevue's Weowna Park. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 30/35 Miles.
    Ride Terrain: Mixed Interurban.

    Ride Details:
         Starting from the Mercer Island Community Center, members will have two options, either the Bellevue Scenic or Bellevue Shoreline Loop. Each loop follows very closely to the same route, except that the Bellevue Shoreline Loop takes in the steep hill climbs into Medina and goes clockwise around Bellevue. The Scenic Loop takes an easier route following the east side of the Mercer Slough and goes counterclockwise.
         Both routes are on lightly traveled roads or good bike lanes and have ample scenery. Both routes have limited access to cafes or stores along the route. Thus it is encouraged that members bring snacks with them for mid ride breaks as well as full water bottles.
         Final route selection will be made by members on ride day so group preferences and weather can be used in decision.

         Starting from the Centennial Trailhead we will go southeast on Old Snohomish Hwy to Monroe. From here we will go east on Old Owen Road to Sultan for a mid-ride break at the Sultan Bakery.
         We return on Ben Howard Road following the Skykomish River back to Monroe where we again pick up Old Snohomish Hwy to the Centennial Trail Head.
         Most of this route is flat or rolling with just one hill climb between Monroe and Sultan on the return trip.

    August 15th, Saturday, Ravensdale - Enumclaw - Mud Mtn. Dam

         Starting from Ravensdale Park we will bike east then south past Kanasket Palmer State Park towards the Green River Gorge Suspension Bridge. From here we continue south on country roads to Enumclaw and on to Mud Mountain Dam Park for lunch. (Shorter route will have lunch at Nolte State Park which also has swimming beach.)
         After lunch we will return to the start on country roads going directly north past Nolte State Park. Riders not wanting quite so much mileage can cut off ~20 miles by taking a shortcut via SE 416th which will skip Mud Mountain Dam Park but still pass by Nolte State Park.
         This route is almost entirely in the country so riders should come prepared with plenty of liquids and snacks plus picnic supplies for lunch. There are no restaurant stops on route.

On Vashon members will have two route choices, either a southend 15 mile loop or the traditional 30 mile Vashon Island Loop. Return to Seattle via the regular ferry or the Virginia V. (See below for alternate return.)
         For members not wanting to get up early enough to catch the 7:30am ferry, you can take the standard ferry from Fauntleroy Ferry Dock (10:10am) in West Seattle and meet us on Vashon Island at La Playa Restaurant. The restaurant sits next to the ferry landing on Vashon Island (see laplayavashon.com). Be sure to get to Lincoln Park by 9:40am to make the ferry if you decide on this option.     Full Day's Schedule
           7am - Arrive at parking lot near Ship Wharf.
           7:30am - Board Virginia V at Lake Union Historic Ship Wharf.
           11am - Arrive on Vashon Island via Virginia V.
           11am-3pm - Vashon Island Ride.
           3:30pm - Leave Vashon via Fauntleroy Ferry.
           4pm - Arrive in West Seattle.
           5:30pm - Arrive back at Wharf.
           6pm - Leave Vashon via Virginia V.
           9pm - Arrive at Lake Union wharf via Virginia V.

         It is a full day of activities so it is recommended that you bring snacks with you for on the boat and during the bike ride.
         You must make reservations for the boat ride in advance by phone at Virginia V Office. For details, click here. Let them know that you are with "Seattle Bicycle Club" to get discounted pricing for group rates with ten members plus going.
         If you return with club members via the Vashon to Fauntleroy Ferry, note that you will have a 14 mile Virginia V - Last of Puget Sound's Mosquito Fleet. urban bike ride from ferry terminal back to the start.
    Alternate Return:
         For no extra charge you can return via the Virginia V, leaving Vashon Island at 6pm giving yourself extra time on the island for sight seeing and relaxing cafe dinner.

    August 22nd, Saturday, Silver Springs - Sunrise
    Ride Start: Silver Springs Campground, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

    Ride Distance: ~43 Miles.
    Ride Terrain: Mountainous.
    Uphill Distance: ~21.5 miles with 3,8000' elevation gain.

         For those wanting to test their climbing legs, join us as we ride from the Silver Springs Campground to Sunrise Vistor Center at Mount Rainier National Park. Enjoy the views as you ride up on the highest elevation paved road in Washington State (6400'). This climb has no "walls," as the grade stays pretty consistent from bottom to top.
         Bring plenty of water and snacks for on ride refueling as there are no facilities once the climb begins. There is food and water available at the Sunrise Visitor Center.
         Silver Springs Campground is located approximately 7 miles east of Greenwater on highway 410. To get to the picnic area, go straight after turning into the campground. The road will lead you down and to the right. The parking areas are located at the bottom.
         Carpooling is highly recommended as space can be limited. There is a $5 fee to park at the campground picnic area.
         There is also a $5 fee to enter Mount Rainier National Park on a bicycle.

    August 23rd, Sunday, Green River/Interurban/Foothills Trails
    Ride Start: Tukwila Communicty Center, Tukwila, WA - Map/Directions.

         With possible good weather on Sunday, we will ride from the Tukwila Community Center south on the Green River, Interurban and Foothills Trails.
         This route gives four good turnaround points either where the Green River and Interurban Trails cross or in Auburn, Sumner or South Prairie. We will bike as far as weather permits or as far as members want.
         Be sure to bring plenty of fluids and snacks with you for the ride as there are not any easy stops to purchase anything on the trail.

    August 30th, Sunday, North Bend - Snoqualmie Falls - Fall City
    Ride Start: North Bend, WA - Map/Directions.
    Sign coming into Ernie's Grove. Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

         From North Bend route goes east of town and then loops back to Ernie's Grove and Snoqualmie Falls. Route is mostly on scenic rural King County roads along with a short section on paved trail.
         Route goes down to Fall City and up again from Snoqualmie Falls but riders wanting a shorter less strenuous ride can relax at falls and catch other riders on the return climb. (Reduces mileage by 17 miles.)

         For a fun change of pace event I'm leading club members on a not so normal cycling event, the 6th Annual BIKE for PIE Ride.
         We will meet in downtown Seattle for the ferry to Bainbridge Island. There we will join up with other area cyclists for the 30 mile Challenge route.
         The challenge route departs from downtown Bainbridge at 10am and has 2 pie stops, a farm pie-eating experience and a final pie reward. The ride will be moderately paced making it easy for all members. Course is open till 2pm or until everyone is SICK of pie (as if it is ever possible to be sick of pie).          This is a fun annual ride to support Our Daily Bread Basket, helping those in need in our communities. This year's event has three ride options with two food stops and mechanical and van support. All participants receive and Emerald City Lights Tote Bag with their registration.          Lopez Island "is not a busy place, except at the ferry landing, and not a place where people hurry, except to catch a ferry."
         "You'll want to put on the brakes and smell the rows of lavender, pick fat blackberries alongside the road, or maybe pull up to the barbed wire and visit with the Scottish Highland cattle, Icelandic sheep or Belgian draft horses. You'll want to look up at red-tailed hawks soaring overhead and look out to seals hauled up on offshore rocks."
         "Lopez Island is a slow place, a friendly place where residents in old cars and trucks wave at strangers, a place with intriguing parks, bays, spits and other spots to stop and explore."
         Bicycles can be rented for anyone wanting to bring relatives with you without bicycles, see the Lopez Bicycle Works Website.
         The return ferry doesn't leave the island till 3:35pm or 5:45pm, getting you back to Anacortes at 4:15pm or 6:25pm.
         The Island Farmer's Market runs from 10am - 2pm and the Total Experience Gospel Choir entertains from 6pm - 8pm for anyone wanting to stay late and return on the 8:25pm ferry (getting to Anacortes at 9pm).

         Parking at the ferry terminal is a little spendy so you may want to come a little early and park along the road to the ferry and bike a mile or two to the dock. You may also want to bring a sandwich or two for snacks and lunch, but there is food available on the island for purchase.

    Meet Magnuson Park 9.30am, parking lot near Shelter #2 (directions below) for our usual Sunday ride, 10am. Lake to Sound Ride: Magnuson Park to Golden Gardens Beach for gorgeous views of the Sound and the Olympic Mountains and back to Magnuson Park for incomparable views of Mt. Rainier and the Cascades from the shores of Lake Washington. 20-25 mile flat ride with an optional climb up Seaview Drive.
    Not Riding Sunday? Come Picnic Anyway
    Show up at 12 noon or earlier to keep Jim company, while he reserves Shelter #2 from 10am. Cyclists expected back around noon.

    Bring your favorite food and beverage (Non-Alcoholic Only) to share and your own eating and serving utensils. We’ll also have a Chinese-Japanese Hot Pot (hot pot cooking) fired up for those who want it. Bring Sukiyaki thin sliced meats, seafood, tofu and vegees to throw in. There’s a grill for those who want to bring accoutrements and want clean up afterwards. Bring kites for Kite Hill, swimwear, music, musical instruments, games and good energy. NO WATER ON SITE. Please bring gallons for washing after riding and drinking. Contributions of coolers, ice, paper plates, utensils, cups, serving utensils, and anything else you can think of greatly appreciated!

         We will be riding to Rattlesnake Lake from North Bend via the Snoqualmie Valley Trail. After we get to the lake, we may take a short jaunt up the Iron Horse Trail before heading back. Bikes with knobby tires are recommended but any bike with wider tires should be okay.

         This is a fun easy route for anyone just wanting a relaxing Sunday afternoon ride. For members wanting a few more miles, you can add in the Cedar River Trail at the end of the lake which will give you an extra 20 miles on flat paved trail for a total of 50 miles.
         Members are encouraged to bring snacks with them for mid ride breaks and lunch break at Kubota Gardens.

         Vic McDaniel and Ray Francisco, fresh high school graduates, set out on their second-hand bicycles from Santa Rosa, California in August of 1909 to take on the challenge of cycling from their home to Seattle for the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition. They pedal, push, and walk a thousand miles of primitive roads for 54 days, and encounter nearly every imaginable natural, mechanical, and human challenge on their one-speed bikes.While adventure is their primary lure, there is a promised purse of $25 from the Post-Intelligencer waiting for them if they can only make it to Seattle before the final day of the AYP.

    October 17th, Saturday, Following the Salmon on the Cedar River
    Ride Start: Cedar River Park, Renton, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
    Salmon Spawning on the Cedar River. Levels: Beginning, Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 30/34 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Flat and Rolling/Hilly.
    Lead: ride lead.
    Ride Details:
         Each year at this time the Department of Natural Resources and Parks hosts visitors on the Cedar River to teach them about the importance of rivers to Washington Salmon. Join us as we ride along the river in pursuit of recreation, fun and knowing more about the importance of our rivers to local wildlife.
         Riders will have two options. Option 1 - going up and back on the Cedar River Trail (last couple of miles goes from paved to packed dirt - easily navigable with narrow width tires as well as cross/mountain bikes. Option 2 - veering off of trail at Cedar Grove Road and taking the Cedar River Park - Landsburg Route which includes a couple of good hill climbs to warm the body.
         Both groups should bring snacks/lunch with them to enjoy at Landsburg's Seattle Water Park.

    October 18th, Sunday, Issaquah - Maple Valley
    Ride Start: Tibbetts Valley Park, Issaquah, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
    SBC Members relaxing at Ravensdale Park. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 41 Miles.
    Ride Terrain: Rolling/Hilly Country.

    Ride Details:
         Starting from Tibbetts Valley Park in Issaquah we will ride south over Cedar Mountain to Maple Valley for mid ride break. After lunch, we will return via the Lake Francis area and Tiger Mountain Road.
         This is a very challenging "winter warm-up ride" similar to Gasworks to Edmonds via Blue Ridge so you will have a few hills to climb. Likewise it is a very scenic route that you won't want to miss.
         Mid ride break will be the Maple Valley Grange for their monthly pancake/egg breakfast for a mid ride break (SR-169 and SE 216th Way on route map). Be sure to bring plenty of snacks and fluids for during the ride.

    October 31st, Saturday, North Seattle - Halloween Ride
    Ride Start: Northacres Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
    In tribute to Tour de Morte - Boo!!! Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 32 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Rolling Urban with Hills.

         Will take a fun ride through North Seattle checking out local halloween decorations and visiting a few haunted cemetaries along the route.
         This year we will be following a new revised route that starts at Northacres Park and has one less stop to reduce the number of turns on the cue sheet.
         Bring snacks with you for mid ride breaks since there aren't any places to purchase snacks along the way. Will stop at the end of the ride for nourishment and socializing.

         Starting from the Mercer Island Community Center, we will bike across the I-90 Bike Trail to Seattle's International District enroute to Alki Beach. After a fun stop at the Alki Bakery for nourishment and socializing, riders will return as they came.

    November 8th, Sunday, Gasworks - Market Loop
    Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.

         This is a fun morning exercise route starting from Gasworks Park, going south along Lake Washington then turning west through Downtown Seattle where the route turns north up Magnolia Hill and then back to the start via Ballard and Fremont.
         We will pass several places along the way where you can pick up a snack and morning coffee, but since the ride is intended to be done in total without long stops, you are asked to bring snacks with you.

         Starting from the Mercer Island, we will bike along the shores of Lake Washington to Kirkland's Marina Park and back. This is a fun route for a cool winter day with a good hill climb to get warmed up and give you a little exercise but with a short enough route to get you back in time so not to take up your whole day.

               We can't guarantee that you'll meet a beautiful,

    November 22, Sun, Kirkland City Streets to Redmond Town Center
    Ride Start: Juanita Beach Park, Kirkland, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am Start.
    SBC Members at Juanita Bay Park. Level: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: ~35 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Rolling with some climbs.
    Lead: ride lead.
    Ride Details:
         Cycle on Kirkland city streets on BOTH the West and East sides of I-405, crossing over I-405 twice, on foot/bicycle bridges. Then, head south on 132nd Ave NE to Old Redmond Road. Swing by Redmond Town Center for lunch at Top Foods. Take the scenic Sammamish River Trail and Woodinville roads west to Wayne Golf Course. Ride back to Juanita Beach Park going south on 100th Ave NE.
         Warm up with hot food and drink at Gail's house after the ride, 1.5 miles from the Juanita Beach Park. Ride over to her house or park your car at the Albertsons store on NE 132nd St. and 100th Ave. NE. It's just a short walk on a gravel trail from the Albertson's parking lot to her house.

         Ride description - "Why not get a workout in before today's feast? Join us for a friendly ride around Lake Sammamish. This ride will be at a high-leisurely low-steady pace. Midpoint break at Tully's in Issaquah.
         Meet at Tennis Court Parking lot, first left off Lake Sammamish Pkwy. Please bring $1 for parking. See you there!"

    Ride Start: Rose Hill Community Center, Mukilteo, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
    Naval Station Everett, Everett, WA. Levels: Social/Recreational.
    Ride Distance: ~26 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Winding, rolling urban arterials with bike lanes and quiet neighborhood streets.
    Lead: ride lead.
    Rain-Snow Policy: Heavy rain moves ride indoors to area café for warm coffee and socializing. Call John at 425-422-2370 for last minute ride status.
    Ride Details:
         Ride along rolling Mukilteo Blvd to Everett for an urban but sleepy cruise to some of the scenic points around the Everett area. Everett is the last of the cities in the Puget Sound area to still feel like a small town. Low traffic on sundays make it a great ride for laid back cycling. Plenty of well marked bike lanes, mountain and sound views, and classic neighborhoods with bayside eateries included.

         If you are new to Seattle cycling, you may not know Chuck Berg, but if you have been here for awhile you know his name instantly. Chuck is a truly great Cascade ride leader that so many other area cyclists learned to ride under.
         Cascade has attracted Chuck back to the saddle after a long vacation. Join other local cyclists welcoming his return.

         This is a new fun route that adds an extra hill climb and a lot of scenery to our normal Mercer Island to Alki Bakery route. For a cool winter day the new route makes for a fun way to get in a little exercise without taking up the whole day cycling.

    December 14th, Monday, Seize The World Celebration
    Location: Spitefire, 2219 4th Ave, Seattle, WA.

    Details:
         Come celebrate Stephen Allen's round-the-world solo bicycle trip to benefit epilepsy research. Stephen has shown by his courage, persistence and relaxed good humor that those with epilepsy need not set limits on themselves. Stephen is my 25 year old nephew. I'm so proud of him!.
         Stephen left the mountains of Colorado in October 2008 heading east. He has cycled across the U.S., Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, India, Thailand and Laos. He's now in China, heading to Japan. He will be in Seattle in early December and will bicycle triumphantly into his hometown of Telluride very soon.
         Stephen will share video clips, pictures and stories at our party. We'll enjoy goodies and toast Stephen's accomplishments. Together, we can give him a proper send-off for the last leg of his amazing trip.
         Everyone is welcome - we hope those with epilepsy and their providers, the bicycling community and the general public will stop by to celebrate with Stephen and wish him well on the rest of his trip! You are welcome to invite others who also want to celebrate with us.

    December 20th, Sunday, Gasworks - West Seattle - Leschi
    Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
    Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
    Club Members bundling up for Winter Weather. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: ~37 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Mixed Interurban with Climbs.
    Lead: ride lead.
    Ride Details:
         This is a new fun city route, starting from the Gasworks Park going south along the Waterfront to Downtown Seattle and Alki Beach. From Alki Point the route continues south to Lincoln Park where it turns east across West Seattle to to the First Avenue South Bridge to Georgetown. From here the route continues east over Beacon Hill to Lake Washington. Here the route turns north along the lake and back to the start.
         Mid ride breaks will be at the Alki Bakery and at Leschi along Lake Washington. Bring snacks or purchase snacks at the break points.
         If weather is questionable, contact ride leader for ride status. Route has two significant climbs, over West Seattle and over Beacon Hill. Anyone wanting to skip the hill climbs can ride with group to Alki Beach and then ride back along the same route for a flat route which is 10 miles shorter.

    December 24th, Thursday, 'Twas the Day Before Christmas
    Ride Start: Tracy Owen/Logboom Park - Map/Directions.

    Ride Terrain: Mostly Flat.

         Since it is Christmas, I thought it would be fun for those that want to get in a ride the day before to join me on Jan Johnson's Cascade Ride. This is a fun time to see others in the biking community outside of our club and a great opportunity to wish a wonderful ride leader a very Merry Christmas.
    Think we can get a new bike in our stocking?      Ride description - "It is the Tenth Annual Day Before Christmas Ride. Are your holiday preparations done? Whether yes or no, you need to get out on your bike if the weather is fine. Let's have a sociable ride to Redmond for lunch. There might be one section of tricky traffic."
         I will bring chocolate truffles to the ride to help everyone get in the Christmas spirit. If you happen to have some reindeer antlers, be sure to wear them (on top your helmet).

    Gateway (Jack Block) Park - West Seattle. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
    Ride Distance: 31 miles.
    Ride Terrain: Mixed Interurban with Climbs.

    Ride Details:
         This is a new fun city route, starting from Mercer Island going west to Alki Beach via the SoDo District. Then going south to Lincoln Park where the route turns east across West Seattle to to the First Avenue South Bridge to Georgetown. From here the route continues northeast over Beacon Hill to the I-90 Bike Trail and back to the start.
         Mid ride break will be at the Alki Bakery.
